Joel Ziegler's Acceptance Speech
April 19,2007

Dear Lions and Friends:

Exactly 30 years ago - I accepted the presidency of this club and succeeded the late police chief William Peto as president. The world was a far different place then. Our club was different. For one thing, only men were invited to join. Much has changed for each of us. Most of the Lions who were members in 1976 are no longer with us.

New crises have arisen that were undreamed of 30 years ago, yet over the course of the years, our club has been and still is a beacon of hope and light for those we serve. Lions - liberty, intelligence, and our nations safety, has taken on a whole new meaning in this post 9/11 era. It is fitting to remember those who have gone before, whose talents shaped and molded us. Our Lions symbol looks to the past and to the future to sustain us. We are blessed that we have always had a vast reservoir of talent to draw upon- and still do.

I would be remiss if I didn't personally thank Lion president Phil Stern for the exemplary display of zeal and energy that has ignited us over the past 2 years. Despite naysayer and critic, his leadership has brought forth much fruit in the way of service and recognition. Our charities account is healthy, our giving to others generous, and our fund-raising successful! Thank you Phil and your dedicated chairmen for a job more than well-done!!

We cannot measure a clubs success in terms of numbers alone. Yes, in 1976 there were more "bodies" in the club. But 30 years later our real strength still lies in our resiliency and our ability to work together for our common goal. Our bond of service lets us put aside our differences, troubles, and personal anxieties for 2 meetings a month to enjoy the fellowship and friendship that can only be found in a Lions Club.

Of this I’m certain, the older we get, the more that our own mortality enters into our thoughts. We all strive to make a difference, to create a positive legacy, to give thanks for the myriad of blessings that we as citizens of the United States enjoy as no other people on earth do.

To whom much is given, much is expected is an old saying which rings true today.

Our Maplewood Lions Club is the perfect blend of the sacrifices of time, talent and good fortune woven over the years that makes us the proud club that we are, thanks to all of you.
I appreciate the faith that you have entrusted in me. I am blessed with a wonderful group of members that I can depend upon, so I accept this challenge and hope that will be given the health and time to make you proud of your decision.

In conclusion lets never lose sight of what we mean and why we are here‑ "to serve." There is still and always will be much need in this complex, confusing, and bewildering society for a volunteer organization like ours. I wish all lions and their loved ones a prosperous, healthy, and safety summer.

God bless you all and thank you.
